Ironside is closing after four and a half years of business in SoMa — and pizza maestro Tony Gemignani is moving in.
Ironside will close after service on Sunday, March 29. The Ironside crew is opting instead to focus on sister restaurant/bar, District, which currently has locations in San Francisco and Oakland, and another en route to San Jose next year.
“We’re honing in on district. All of our growth efforts are focused there,” says Ironside partner Jon D’Angelica, adding that they will slide Ironside’s popular weekend brunch service over to nearby District.
Meanwhile, Gemignani — whose Vegas expansion was profiled in this Sunday’s Chronicle by Jonathan Kauffman — is planning to install a Slice House in the two-story space.
But this SoMa outpost of Slice House will be different from the North Beach original and the one in the ballpark. For one, it’s much bigger, with 60 seats and a dine-in option; Gemignani won’t change much to the stately space.
A triple-stack Italian electric brick oven will churn out traditional New York slices, calzones and stromboli, in addition to a newfound emphasis multigrain pies. Delivery will be available via Caviar. There will also be expanded pasta offerings, specifically ones made with ancient grains.
The goal is to open by the time the Giants take the field on opening day: April 13.
